Stories of Strength follows a long line of community arts oral history projects that Outloud (formally known as Bankstown Youth Development Service) created for their space in Bankstown. Over the 26 years that Outloud have been operating, oral history and storytelling has always been a facet of their community programming.
This project was first designed in 2015 as a response to the Multicultural NSW Compact funding scheme. Compact’s mission statement says “Compact aims to inspire young people to stand up and stand united for Australia’s peaceful and harmonious way of life” they go on to say “COMPACT recognises that, whatever may be taking place in the complex world we live in, solutions start at home with local communities working together, supporting each other, and building on the strengths of our culturally diverse success story.”
In 2019 Community Activities Lake Macquarie (CALM) was successful in securing a grant from the Department of Industry, Innovations and Science to deliver the Stories of Strength program in Lake Macquarie in partnership with Outloud.
CALM has supported people in the Lake Macquarie area for over 32 years. Our team provides programs, services and an effective voice to empower children, families and young people across Lake Macquarie.
The aim is to deliver a dynamic program that uses the power of storytelling to develop students’ wellbeing, resilience and understanding of their community. Read More . . .
