Hunter-Newcastle Mentees Pitch their Community Project Ideas

The week of Monday 14th of August and Monday 21st of August saw Community Activities Lake Macquarie busy delivering a series of 'Pitch It!' sessions across nine Hunter-Newcastle High Schools particpating in the 2017 Youth Frontiers Program.

Powered up with ample energy Youth Frontiers Coordinators Nicole Molyneux and Sarah Berry successfully steered and led the sessions for Swansea High School, Lake Macquarie High School, Morisset High School, Glendale High School, Singleton High School, Newcastle High School, Hunter River High School, Belmont High School and Maitland Grossmann High School. The general consensus was a whopping thumbs up!

With 'Showcase' not too far away, mentees and their mentors are keen to run with the ideas and advice presented to them as they approach the next stage of their project development.
Youth Frontiers is an in school mentoring program for students in years 8 or 9, who have the capacity to benefit from mentoring with a focus on leadership and civic engagement. Every year, across NSW, more than 1,200 young people will have the opportunity to participate in the program. In 2017 Community Activities Lake Macquarie has delivered the Youth Frontiers Program across the Hunter to 120 students in nine High Schools including Swansea High, Belmont High, Newcastle High, Glendale High, Lake Macquarie High, Morisset High, Maitland Grossman High, Hunter River High and Singleton High.

The program will give young people (mentees) an opportunity to build life skills and self-confidence through working collaboratively with their mentors to undertake a community project that makes a positive difference in their local community.

By sharing fun activities and exposing a young person to new experiences, a mentor encourages positive choices, promotes high self-esteem, supports academic achievement and introduces the young person to new ideas.
